You can use excess currency like tombstones or seals to get materials to sell. You can get rewards from wondrous tails that give you grade V and VI crafting material which are worth a lot. You can join farm parties for outdated fights like sephirot or Nidhogg and get their crafting items to sell. Do weekly treasure map groups, which are cheap and more often than not pay out in loads even if it's not your map. Assign retainers to get items that have consistent value, like grade 3 soil or even crystals. If you scrounge up enough money to get a house, that becomes its own revenue stream through gardening.
Crafting and gathering are designed to make money, sure, and everyone should at least try them to see if they have any interest. But in my experience as someone who hates crafting and gathering yet has a small house and more ffxiv gil than I know what to do with, the best way to get money is to play the game. Sell what you don't want, automize it where you can, and try to remember that gil is not actually worth that much.
